on the horizon

Naples’ luxury hospitality landscape continues to expand with the opening of Vanderbilt Cafe, coming this fall at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Naples. Designed as a polished, low-key gathering place, the cafe and its counter service center on single-origin artisan coffees, custom, scratch-made European pastries, tarts and laminated croissants from Mikkelsen’s Pastry Shop and a curated menu of light bites. The collaboration marks a full-circle moment for founders Elizabeth and Paw Mikkelsen, whose culinary roots in the region began decades ago just down the road at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples on Vanderbilt Beach.

Papillon Wine Bar brings Parisian salon style to the region when it opens this September near the Downtown Fort Myers River District. The kitchen operates on a weekly rotating menu built around regional Florida produce, coastal catches and small-batch ingredients from domestic artisanal purveyors. Initial menu items include poached Apalachicola oysters with a spicy mango sauce, cold-smoked African pompano with marigold oil, and stuffed Poulet Bleu chicken with turnips and parmesan foam. The beverage program bypasses mass-market labels to focus on independent winemakers and biodynamic vineyards, designed for direct pairing with the changing kitchen lineup.

The regional fine-dining frontier enters a new era as The Cellar at Butcher Private prepares to reopen on October 1. Operating as a hidden sanctuary attached to the members-only club Butcher Private from local restaurateurs Veljko Pavicevic and Corinne Ryan, the room signals the city’s evolution into a playground for international culinary artists by welcoming newly appointed chef de cuisine Aurelien Duchase. Aurelien polished his craft under three-Michelin-caliber titans before serving as a research and development chef at Copenhagen’s famed, two-starred powerhouse Alchemist. He has spent the summer collaborating with Fort Myers ceramicist Christine Cutting to design bespoke tableware for the menu, each piece an extension of the story. The project marks Christine’s most monumental partnership to date, hand-crafting over 400 custom vessels tailored to the chef’s vision.

The Di Falco family is moving from Italian market staples to the craft of the slice with La Pizzeria by Mercato Italiano, now finalizing its buildout beside the family’s original Mercato Italiano marketplace. Expect blistered oak smoke, multi-day natural fermentation and a 900-degree stone floor. The menu features custom pies built around imported San Marzano tomatoes, boutique mozzarella sourced from small-batch dairies and the unmistakable char of a proper Neapolitan crust.

open for business

Following its annual summer hiatus for maintenance and property improvements, Nosh on Naples Bay has reopened at its waterfront perch. Led by owner and head chef Todd Johnson, the restaurant returns with its signature mix of globally inspired small plates, worldly ingredients and a polished craft cocktail program. Guests can reserve a seat on the outdoor deck overlooking the marina or settle into the indoor happy hour scene, proof that dinner by the water remains one of Southwest Florida’s most reliable pleasures.

Naples’ Cafe Nat, a daytime concept operating directly inside the moody, midnight-hued dining room of Nat Nat neo-bistro, debuted this month. Shifting the high-end evening wine bar into a high-vibrational morning sanctuary, the cafe serves single-origin beans and whisked-to-order matchas with house-made syrups and from-scratch almond milk. Behind the glass case, a micro-batch menu of scratch-made pastries evolves daily. Locals can settle into plush seating to shatter a hot, flaky laminated croissant or linger over deep, comforting slabs of house-loaved banana bread, Colombian empanadas, Basque cheesecake and their signature sweet-and-savory miso chocolate chip cookies.

kudos

Sweet Melissa’s Restaurant has formally joined the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce, marking a ceremonial milestone for the celebrated restaurant. After 14 years as a sanctuary on Sanibel Island, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony signals Sweet Melissa’s next chapter: a relocation that reconnects the restaurant with the broader Southwest Florida community and firmly anchors it in the mainland’s culinary fabric. James Beard Award-nominated chef Melissa Donahue continues to practice the inventive, French-trained style that first defined her reputation, blending contemporary American fine dining with a sophisticated New Orleans flair. Think: robust ancho and honey-braised short ribs to her iconic, Creole-influenced fish stew packed with Gulf seafood, smoky chorizo and a rich tomato-saffron broth.

This fall, Naples’ sustainable restaurant trail brings conscious dining down to earth. Spearheaded by Bicyclette’s chef Kayla Pfeiffer, the September-through-December initiative connects diners with restaurants that prioritize hyper-local seasonal sourcing. North Naples organic neo-bistro Nat Nat embodies what full commitment looks like with a rotating menu built around relationships with local farmers and fishers like Inyoni Organic Farm and Dilly’s Fish Co., while other establishments embrace the ethos through waste reduction or select partnerships, sourcing kaleidoscopic tomatoes from 12 Seasons Farm or bivalves from chef darlings Everglades Oysters. The trail’s custom hand-illustrated maps by local artist Bethany Burhoe give diners a way to see the region’s food system as a living network. Those who complete the trail are entered into a charity raffle, with the grand prize featuring a Chef Residency Dinner at Kayla’s Heyday Cookshop.
